Director of Physical Education and Health, K-12
This is a 12-month Probationary appointment
This position provides district-wide leadership to ensure high-quality curriculum, instruction, and programming that promote student wellness, physical fitness, and health literacy in alignment with the District’s instructional vision. In addition, the Director of Physical Education and Health oversees the coordination, and evaluation of all athletic programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and student well-being. In this role, the Director also supports the Executive Director in all aspects of health, physical education, and athletics, contributing to program planning, implementation, and continuous improvement.
Prerequisites for the position include:
- New York State certification – SDA, SBL, or SDL
- Demonstrated administrative and instructional leadership experience
- Expertise in health education, physical education, and wellness programming
- Knowledge of New York State Learning Standards for Health, Physical Education, as well as Commissioner’s Regulations related to physical education and health
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and district leadership
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide supportive leadership and direction for rigorous, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate health and physical education programs for all students.
- Lead the implementation of the New York State Learning Standards for Health and Physical Education and district wellness initiatives.
- Promote lifelong health literacy, physical fitness, and wellness practices, including social-emotional well-being.
- Coordinate the development, articulation, and alignment of the K-12 health and physical education curriculum to ensure vertical and horizontal coherence.
- Work cooperatively with administrations to implement curriculum and instructional programs.
Instructional Support and Evaluation
- Observe and evaluate instructional staff in collaboration with building administrators.
- Provide feedback and guidance to support effective instruction and student engagement.
- Prepare recommendations for tenure in collaboration with the athletic director and building principals.
- Support mentoring and induction of new and probationary teachers.
Professional Development
- Convene and facilitate department meetings to establish instructional priorities and program goals.
- Plan and provide professional learning opportunities aligned with best practices in health, physical education, and wellness.
- Support staff development in areas such as fitness education, health literacy, mental health awareness, and inclusive practices.
Student Support and Programming
- Promote equitable access to physical education, health instruction, and wellness opportunities for all students.
- Support and coordinate programs related to health education, physical fitness, nutrition, and mental wellness.
- Collaborate with staff to support student well-being and school climate initiatives.
- Oversee and support compliance with health education mandates, including topics such as substance abuse prevention, mental health, and personal safety.
Personnel and Supervision
- Collaborate with building leadership on staffing, scheduling, and program implementation.
- Participate in recruitment, hiring, and selection of instructional staff.
- Support supervision in the area of athletics
Facilities, Equipment, and Safety
- Oversee the safe use and maintenance of gymnasiums, fitness centers, and physical education equipment.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices in physical activity and health instruction.
- Collaborate with Facilities and Buildings & Grounds to maintain safe and effective learning environments.
Instructional Resources and Budget
- Oversee the selection, evaluation, and implementation of instructional materials and equipment.
- Assist in the preparation and management of the Health and Physical Education budget.
- Maintain appropriate records, including equipment inventory and program resources.
District Leadership and Community Engagement
- Serve on district committees and leadership teams as assigned.
- Prepare and deliver reports and presentations related to health, wellness, and physical education programs.
- Collaborate with community organizations, health agencies, and wellness partners to enhance programming.
- Promote district initiatives related to student wellness, fitness, and healthy lifestyles.
The Director of Physical Education and Health will report directly to the Executive Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics and the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
