ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION AND STUDENT SERVICES

Assistant Director of Alternative Education and Student Services
This is a 12-month Probationary appointment
The Assistant Director of Alternative Education and Student Services serves as a key instructional and operational leader responsible for overseeing the district’s Academy and School and Community Child Care program. The role in the Academy is critical in helping to design and sustain innovative, student-centered learning environments that meet the needs of our non-traditional learners.
In addition, this position plays a vital leadership role in our before and aftercare program, strengthening the high school special education program by ensuring alignment between alternative education and special education services. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with administration, special education staff, and related service providers to expand inclusive opportunities, improve outcomes for students with disabilities, and ensure compliance with state and federal mandates.

Minimum Qualifications
- Valid NYS Certification as a School District Administrator (SDA), School Administrator and Supervisor (SAS), and/or School Building Leader (SBL).
- Special Education certification preferred.
- Minimum of five years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience at the secondary level with special education students.
- Proven ability to foster a positive school culture, promote academic achievement, support professional growth, and enhance student engagement.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and crisis management skills.
- Flexible, responsive leadership style aligned to student, staff, and school needs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders using a team-oriented approach to planning and problem-solving.
- Knowledge of New York State graduation requirements, pathways, and vocational programs.
- Experience implementing restorative practices.
- Visible, approachable, and accessible throughout the school day.
- Ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Creative problem solver with knowledge of best instructional practices in alternative education settings.
- Ability to develop organizational structures, policies, and procedures that reflect students’ social, emotional, and developmental needs.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership & School Culture
- Provide instructional leadership to promote student achievement, engagement, and graduation outcomes.
- Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Lead professional learning focused on effective instruction, differentiation, and classroom management in alternative settings.
- Promote restorative and trauma-informed practices to support student behavior and school climate.
- Oversee student support systems, including counseling, behavioral supports, and interventions.
- Address students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs through targeted, collaborative approaches.
- Advocate for students and families.
ESSA Grants
- Responsible for all aspects for applying for Titles I-IV grant funding from New York State, including writing the narrative, budget development, consultation, and collaboration with district leadership.
- Coordinate and maintain articulation with in-district nonpublic school partners.
- Ensure district compliance through oversight of purchasing and procurement to ensure all expenditures comply with state and federal guidelines.
Staff Development & Supervision
- Conduct classroom observations and evaluations across locations.
- Provide coaching to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
- Plan and deliver professional development aligned with district priorities.
Operations & Program Management
- Oversee daily operations, including budgeting, scheduling, staffing, facilities, and technology.
- Lead master scheduling to ensure equitable access to programs and services.
- Ensure compliance with state, federal, and district regulations.
Collaboration & Partnerships
- Collaborate with high school leadership on program development and alignment.
- Support transition planning for students entering the Academy.
- Build partnerships with families, community organizations, businesses, and higher education institutions.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to support student success and post-secondary planning.
- Perform additional duties related to alternative education and student services as assigned.
