DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE, K-12

Applications will be accepted for the following anticipated vacancy:

 Director of Science, K-12
This is a 12-month Probationary appointment

Prerequisites for the position include:

  • New York State certification – SDA, SBL, or SDL
  • Demonstrated administrative and instructional leadership experience
  • Expertise in curriculum development, instructional leadership, and assessment practices
  • Knowledge of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and current instructional best practices
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and district leadership

 

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide supportive leadership and direction for rigorous and challenging science programs for all students through sound, student-centered decision-making.
  • Lead the implementation of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) and district science initiatives.
  • Promote inquiry-based instruction, scientific reasoning, STEAM integration, and real-world application of science concepts.
  • Coordinate the development, articulation, and alignment of the K-12 science curriculum to ensure vertical and horizontal coherence.
  • Work cooperatively with Principals, Teacher Leads, and Central Office Administration to implement curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Review and recommend new course proposals and program enhancements.
  • Participate in regional and State curriculum initiatives.
  • Analyze district, state, and local assessment data to monitor student performance and guide instructional improvement.
  • Support the development and implementation of common assessments and data-informed instructional practices.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the In-Star TOSA.
  • Observe and evaluate instructional staff in collaboration with building administrators.
  • Support Middle School lead teachers and building administration in both elementary and secondary levels with 5th and 8th grade science assessments and secondary Regents exams.
  • Articulation with elementary science support staff.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to support professional growth and effective science instruction.
  • Prepare recommendations for tenure in collaboration with building principals.
  • Support mentoring and induction of new and probationary teachers.
  • Convene and facilitate department and district meetings to establish instructional priorities.
  • Promote equitable access to advanced coursework, research opportunities, and enrichment programs.
  • Support student participation in science competitions, research programs, internships, and recognition opportunities.
  • Collaborate with building leadership on staffing, scheduling, and program implementation.
  • Monitor and coordinate the selection, evaluation, and implementation of instructional materials, laboratory equipment, and digital resources.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of the science department budget.
  • Maintain appropriate records including inventory, equipment, and instructional resources.
  • Oversee chemical inventory, storage, and disposal procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Establish partnerships with higher education institutions, research organizations, and community resources to enhance science programming.

The Director of Science, K-12, will report directly to the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, assessment practices, and best practices in mathematics instruction

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide supportive leadership and direction for rigorous, equitable, and challenging mathematics programs for all students K-12 through sound, student-centered decision-making.
  • Work cooperatively with Principals, Teacher Leaders, and Central Office Administration to implement and refine the K-12 mathematics curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Collaborate with district and building leadership teams on instructional improvement, curriculum alignment, assessment practices, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Monitor and coordinate the development, articulation, and alignment of mathematics curriculum across grades K-12, ensuring vertical and horizontal coherence.
  • Lead initiatives to improve mathematics achievement and equity, including targeted support for diverse learners, including students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and advanced learners.
  • Analyze district, state, and local assessment data to identify trends, inform instruction, and guide program improvements.
  • Support the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Eureka and academic intervention services (AIS) in mathematics.
  • Support the integration of technology, digital tools, and innovative instructional practices in mathematics instruction.
  • Monitor and coordinate the selection, evaluation, and implementation of instructional materials, textbooks, and digital resources, and make recommendations to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Review new course proposals and make recommendations to the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction regarding mathematics programming and course offerings.
  • Support Middle School lead teachers and building administration in secondary levels with 3-8 testing and secondary Regents exams.
  • Observe and evaluate instructional staff in collaboration with building administrators and provide constructive feedback to support professional growth.
  • Prepare recommendations for tenure in collaboration with building principals.

  • Serve on District committees; prepare reports and presentations; and establish collaborative relationships with external organizations, professional associations, and institutions that support mathematics education.

  • Provide leadership in the implementation of the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards and grades 7-12 literacy initiatives.
  • Work cooperatively with Principals, Instructional Coaches and Central Office Administration to implement and refine the K-12 ELA curriculum and instructional programs.

  • Support programs that promote independent reading, writing development, and literacy engagement across all grade levels.
  • Monitor and coordinate the selection, evaluation, and implementation of instructional materials, texts, and digital literacy resources, and make recommendations to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Review new course proposals and make recommendations to the Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction regarding ELA programming and course offerings.
  • Observe and evaluate instructional staff in collaboration with building administrators and provide constructive feedback to support professional growth.
  • Prepare recommendations for tenure in collaboration with building principals.
  • Convene, chair, and monitor department staff meetings to articulate priorities for ELA instruction and literacy development.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide high-quality professional development in literacy instruction, writing pedagogy, reading strategies, and assessment literacy in conjunction with Central Office Administration.
  • Assist in the preparation and oversight of the English Language Arts Department budget, including instructional materials and professional development.
  • Serve on District committees; prepare reports and presentations; and establish collaborative relationships with external organizations, professional associations, and institutions that support literacy and English Language Arts education.
